Fakenham Race Course
Location: Fakenham, Norfolk
Fakenham Race Course Ltd required new facilities to be constructed at the rear of the main Grandstand. The grandstand is a concrete frame comprising a sloping stepped viewing area to trackside with changing and admin space to the back under the viewing.A steel frame structure allows the roof to cover the viewing area punctuated at the rear with mono pitch lean to roof. The brief was to extend the rear areas to accommodate improved changing and sanitary facilities for the jockeys, a new medical centre, a new admin centre and a trainers and members lounge.
The new building has been designed to cover the rear of the stand with the admin centre separated from the lounge by a covered roof allowing racegoers covered but external facilities.
The admin centre allowed the jockey weighing area to be part of feature of the process of the meeting. The jockeys are now weighed in full view of the race goer. The buildings were designed and finished internally to enable the characteristics of Fakenham to be retained. The structure of the building is exposed internally , the walls are clad with high quality ply facings and the floor finish is exposed concrete. Lighting is utilitarian with feature steel fittings and the colouring is in keeping with FRC corporate colours. External walls are partially rendered and timber panelled carrying on a theme from the newer Prince of Wales stand.
The building has met expectations and was constructed by EN Suiters of Kings Lynn on time and within budget. Services were provided by Dempsey Heating and Bircham Electrical . Other consultant involvement was John Plummer Structural Engineers and Newson Consulting Cost Control.
